Recap: Philadelphia Phillies VS Oakland Athletics 2025-05-24
What a wild ride in Oakland, folks. The Philadelphia Phillies just extended their winning streak to nine games, and I'm not sure if the Oakland Athletics are still picking themselves up from the thrill ride that was this 11-inning, 9-6 barnburner.
Let's set the scene: Max Kepler decided to crash the party with a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth, because why not, right? And just when you thought it was all over, Brandon Marsh threw a perfect strike to home plate for a double play in the bottom of the 10th, saving the game and giving the Phillies new life.
But the real hero of the night was Kyle Schwarber, who broke through in the 11th with a two-run, go-ahead double. I mean, the guy's got 17 home runs and 37 RBIs on the season - he's on fire. The Phillies' offense, averaging 4.8 runs per game and hitting .262, is a force to be reckoned with.
Now, the Athletics... well, they're struggling as underdogs, with a 20% win rate when set at +141 or more. And with a team ERA of 5.31, it's no wonder they're having a tough time keeping up. Gunnar Hoglund will try to turn things around for the A's on Sunday, but he's got his work cut out for him against Jesus Luzardo, who's rocking a 5-0 record and a 1.95 ERA.
The Phillies, with their 66.7% win rate when favored on the moneyline, are looking like the team to beat. And with Bryce Harper's 52 hits and .380 OBP, they've got the talent to back it up. The Athletics will need to bring their A-game (no pun intended) if they want to take down the Phillies on Sunday.
So, who's ready for the rematch? The Phillies and Athletics face off again on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. ET. Will the Phillies keep their streak alive, or can the Athletics pull off the upset? Tune in to find out.
